Responding to a call to serve the poor sick, Mother Marianne devoted 35 years to caring for those afflicted with Hansen’s disease on Kalaupapa, Molokai, Hawaii. There, she set about bringing dignity and beauty to this desolate place.

Mother Marianne planted seeds of every kind - flowers, trees, fruit and shade. People questioned how she could possibly grow anything on the windy and dry Kalaupapa landscape yet every seed she planted seemed to thrive.

Pots of flowers were lined up in front of the convent and she would invite patients to plant them at their cottages.
